Does anybody know?

I really want to make a homebuilt wind generator power but have no idea how. Im a complete noob when it comes to this stuff lol

Get a Heavy Duty truck alternator, bolt a propeller to it and mount it on a pole. you now have a wind generator with a built in voltage regulator.

Attach wires to the appropriate bolts on the back of the Alternator. Attach the other end of the wires to 12 V. batteries.

Attach the 12 V. batteries to an Inverter that changes the 12 V. to 120 V. now you can power your TV, etc. until the batteries go dead and you need to recharge them.

Homebuilt wind generators are simple and easy to build. I did it myself to get power to my garage and it was cheap to build.

A single polymer that can be used in both new age plastic electronics as well as plastic solar cells could spell greater cost-savings and open up new design options for electronic and solar cell companies. A*STAR’s IMRE has developed a new polymer that not only produces a high charge mobility of 0.2 cm2/V.s, which is the same value achieved by commercially available semiconducting materials but also has a high solar power conversion efficiency of 6.3%. this makes IMRE’s polymer one of the few that has both these properties. in addition to this, polymers of the same class as IMRE’s, which are those that use thiophene and benzothiadiazole as the building blocks, could only achieve 2.2% power conversion.

“Current polymers are usually good in one aspect or another, either as a good conductor for use in electronics or endowed with high power conversion efficiency – but not both”, said IMRE Senior Scientist, Dr. Chen Zhi Kuan, the principal researcher working on the polymers. “IMRE’s polymer functions not only as a good material to make electronic components, the same material can be used to convert sunlight to electricity efficiently”. The polymer can also be easily applied in roll-to-roll printing techniques which is similar to how newspapers are currently printed making it possible to manufacture large area-scale printed electronics and organic solar cells quickly and cheaply.

With IMRE’s polymer, manufacturers could save cost using just a single bulk resource for making both printed electronics and organic solar cells. The material could also possibly be used in designing new devices where both power harnessing and electronics are needed in a single component. an example of this would be chemical sensors based on organic thin-film transistors and powered by organic solar cells.

Printed electronics often rely on organic materials like polymers that can be easily processed and manufactured as opposed to traditional electronics (or metal electronics) which rely on inorganics such as copper or silicon. The polymers can be made into thinner, lighter and cost-effective electronic components and organic solar cells.

The IMRE team is developing other organic materials-based polymers that can be scaled up to production and integrated easily into organic electronics. these materials can be used to make energy harvesting and low-power consumption devices like low-cost organic solar cells, new flexible display devices, next generation smart labels and RFID tags.

How would be possible to mitigate the climate change effects through using renewable energy resources focusing on bio electricity, geothermal energy and hydropower?

Let's be logical about this.

First one has to make the assumption that the climate is changing. next we have to assume that the extra CO2 we are generating is the cause of climate change, also known as anthropomorphic global warming (AGW). If one works from these assumptions, then you "mitigate climate change effects" by generating less CO2. The most obvious way to do this is to generate electricity using an energy source which does not produce CO2. in other words, replace a power plant run by coal, oil, or natural gas with one run by any of the energy sources you mention.

That's the simple answer to your question.

Hydroelectricity has a demonstrated ability to take market share away from fossil fuels which is what you need to do if you want to solve global warming. The only problem is that there aren't enough hydro sites for what you'd need. it would of course involve flooding a lot of land and so have big environmental effects along with getting a lot of protesters against it (many of the same people who say we need more renewable energy too) but from a technical point of view it'll work quite well.

Using biomass has the very big problem that we just can't grow enough to power our civilisation, attempts to use it as fuel so far have only caused food supply problems (remember that fossil fuels are biomass that was created over millions of years). Still, burning the waste methane from landfill will help (as CO? isn't as bad as methane and you also get a bit of electricity out of it) but that won't be much help.

Geothermal is a niche power source that only works in a few places, Iceland gets good use out of it but even there hydro is bigger, it can provide a little bit of help but nowhere near enough (hot rock geothermal is also likely to cause earthquakes along with being unproven at taking market share from fossil fuels).

Solar and Wind have big problems with reliability and require some other power source to back them up, hydro works well for that but the limits of hydro capacity mean that if you want to use those on a large scale you'll need something else and right now that means natural gas which means that they aren't actually helping very much (and may actually be hurting because the faster responding natural gas plants that you'd use aren't as efficient as what you'd use if you didn't need to be able to respond nearly instantly to the wind dying down).

In short, you can't actually do it if you stick with renewable resources, you must accept nuclear power if you actually want to solve the problem.

There is no such thing as renewable energy.

Climate changes, always has, always will.
If you're talking about man-made global warming that's different. You first have to prove there's changes that need to be mitigated. So-called 'renewable energy resources' may reduce the release of green house gasses. However, in some cases the manufacturing, servicing, and distribution of these things produces almost as much green house gas as they're intended to prevent.
The term 'climate change' was adopted by the global warming crowd so that no matter what happens, hot, cold, rain, drought, it's your fault.

Like it or not, that is what is already underway due to government legislation and programs at various levels. The idea is to invest in energy that does not contribute to the carbon load of the planet. Don't forget that the most important tool is in fact conservation, both at the system wide level like improving transmission lines for electricity, and at the consumer level by getting a fuel efficient car or even an electric one and buying renewable sourced electricity for example.

Anthropogenic Global Warming theory (AGW) proposed that mankind's release of prehistoric CO2 back into the atmosphere was causing planetary warming. Socialist world wide geared up to collect massive new taxes on all sorts of fossil fuel use.

Then around 1999 the Globe stopped warming even though CO2 levels continued to rise.
Rather than admit to the theoretical difficulties, Socialists & Scientists changed the theory of 'Anthropogenic Global Warming' to 'Anthropogenic Climate Change'.though it is somewhat unclear exactly WHAT aspect of the Climate is changing.

Regardless AGW (or ACC) theory blames old world CO2 – hence ANY energy source that DOES NOT use fossil fuels is considered a 'mitigating' factor.

The term 'renewable' is applied to any power source being 'renewed' via Solar Energy.

So while fossil fuels WERE biologically created using solar energy – we are NOT using Solar energy to replace them, hence they are NOT being renewed, hence CO2 is going into the atmosphere and NOT being extracted.

Using Corn to create alcohol would be a good example of the 'renewable' concept since the corn plant extracts the CO2 from the atmosphere which is latter released when the Alcohol is burned as fuel. However much of the energy uses to process the corn comes from fossil fuel, so this method still releases a great deal of CO2. also as corn shortages consequently force world populations to grow alternative grain products using fossil fuels – so to be honest the use of corn based fuel alcohol probable INCREASES the rate of non-renewed CO2 emissions.

'Solar-electric is considered 'renewable' since the sunshine is converted directly to electricity.
Of course a great deal of fossil fuel energy is used to make Solar-electric cells so the mitigation begins only after the cell has produced more energy than it took to make.

Burning wood is renewable so long as trees are growing fast enough to 'renew' the wood being burned.

Hydroelectric becomes 'renewable' as soon as the power extracted by Sunshine 'lifting' water exceeds the fossil fuel cost of construction.

Geothermal & Nuclear however are NOT renewable. The Sun is NOT restoring the heat being extracted from the earth OR recreating the energy derived from splitting large atoms.
Of course if our sun were a bit larger it would produce 'nuclear' materials when it went nova, but this time frame begs the notion of renewable.

Still if you expand the time frame, even fossil fuels are to some degree renewable. Trees collect the CO2 that cars throw into the air. The wood & paper we make from these trees usually winds up in a landfill that we bury, and in a hundred million years or so those landfills will be pockets of oil.

Its pretty much real proven science that not only is it happening, but that we are greatly to blame for it. Renewable energy sources have the advantage that the fuel is free and their use improves our national energy security without having to rely on imported fuel from potentially unstable regimes. Those reasons alone are good enough reason to use renewable energy sources.

If you believe climate change is going on, regardless of whether or not human activity is contributing to it, then you might well wish to explore ways in which human activity can mitigate it. The fact that a forest fire is started by a natural bolt of lightning does not mean human intervention can't help to reduce the impact of the fire. there is no reason the same shouldn't be true of global warming.

The extraction of fossil fuel (coil, oil and natural gas) is expensive and capital intensive. The creation of all that capital equipment to extract fossil fuel, refine it and move it around uses a lot of energy, the consumption of which causes pollution. Then, we we use the fuel, it creates more pollution. a large part of that pollution is carbon dioxide. Quite apart from any pollution, we will eventually run out of fossil fuel so its use is not sustainable in the long term.

Some people will say that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant because plants need it to grow but the fact is that plants had plenty of it before we started burning fossil fuel. The scientists tell us that the excess carbon dioxide we are producing is trapping heat in the earth's atmosphere which is slowly contributing to climate change. If that is true (I am not competent to say it is true and am certainly not competent to say it is NOT true), then using renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels will reduce carbon dioxide emissions, so reducing the resulting 'greenhouse effect' that is said to be a major element of global warming.

I am not sure bio-electricity is (is this about energy from bio-digesters?) but geothermal energy (exploiting the heat stored deep in the earth) and hydro-electricity (using the flow of water to drive turbines to make electricity) do not produce carbon dioxide and do not involve any material depletion of their energy source so they are considered sustainable.

Some people will argue that global warming is not happening (though the weight of scientific evidence says it is) but there are good reasons for using more renewable energy anyway for reasons of economics, national security, reducing pollution and sustainability.

You can't. because man's use of energy is not causing climate change. The climate was changing long before man was even here and will do the same when we are gone.

The high cost of electricity power in the Philippines, I thought wind mills are the answer.

I was about to mention Ilocos but mr. Mctanggol has beaten me to it.

There is, of course, solar energy harnessed by solar arrays.

And more small scale turbines to harness hydraulic power.

We might also look into natural gas, coal mining, etc. etc.

But the best is yet to come. they have this theory that about 38,000 feet below sea level, we have pure deuterium produced by natural fusion. This is not a radioactive thing, but the problem is how to withstand the terrific pressure down there, which might just do a fusion act with the very blood and guts of anyone who goes for it.

Guess that it would be useful, especially on the mountains where the the wind is stronger.

Unfortunately, 8 years ago here in Tagaytay PAGASA had one at their local station. The next time I came, the blades were missing… and when I moved here, the whole thing was gone. Maybe you could ask PAGASA why they did that.

It is exciting to know there is an alternate source of energy that can be used to meet your needs. when considering an alternate energy source such as windmill power, there are several things to consider. Stay open minded, and then decide what is best for you.

just hours after Hurricane Irene’s passage over the region, Elizabeth City appeared to be back to business as usual Sunday afternoon.

Big box stores, convenience marts, supermarkets and fast-food restaurants were back open, and business traffic was on the move.

At the Lowe’s Home Improvement store, Brent Griffin, a logger from Edenton was picking up plywood to cover a damaged truck window.

“I’m just getting this for (Monday) so we can go back to work in the woods,” he said.

Stacey Lentz, a spokeswoman for Lowe’s, said management at the Elizabeth City store told her that the store is amply stocked with cleanup supplies and equipment.

“We are anticipating another shipment of generators and chain saws,” she said.

not too far away at the Farm Fresh supermarket, Patricia Williams, 39, a dental technician at the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Support Center, said she did not purchase groceries prior to the storm. Williams had been worried about food spoiling in the event of a power outage, so she made sure she had just canned goods on hand.

“and now I’m getting things that need to be refrigerated,” she said.

“It was OK,” Williams said of the crowds inside Farm Fresh Sunday. “I thought there would be a lot of people.”

Christy Phillips-Brown, a spokeswoman for Food Lion, said the grocery chain is working to restock items most needed after storms, such as ice and water.

“We will closely monitor our product levels at our stores and will restock items needed for our customers as quickly as possible,” she said.

just outside the Walmart Supercenter, Andrew Courtwright, 42, and his family were heading in to buy groceries and supplies Sunday.

“We had plenty of stuff” to ride out the storm, Courtwright, of Tyner, said.

“It was rough,” he said of Irene’s impact. He and his family were without power from about 9:30 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

“It got a little hot in the house, but as soon as the power came back on and the A/C (air conditioner) kicked in, we were all good,” he said.

Courtwright noted that when he and his family lived in Norfolk, Va., they were without power for 12 days after Hurricane Isabel struck the East coast.

Michael Francis, 27, of Edenton, said he, too, was picking up groceries, mainly soft drinks.

Francis rode out the storm in Chesapeake, Va.

Levell Walker, 45, of Elizabeth City, who had just finished shopping at the supercenter, said she was “a little nervous” about riding out the storm.

Walker said she received phone calls from family members and friends throughout the night, some of them coming from as far away as Washington, D.C., Florida and Georgia.

“they were asking, ‘Were we all right?’” she said.

Williams, who also rode out Hurricane Isabel, said she wasn’t scared by Irene. She was a little concerned, however, when wind speeds accelerated Saturday evening.

She said she and her family were without power for about four hours Saturday. Because of that, they stayed the night at her mother’s house, which still had power.

Williams said the situation could have been worse. She noted that she was without power for at least five days following Isabel.

in the Pine Lakes subdivision, Cynthia Mastro’s family was cleaning up Sunday from the storm.

Cathy Gray, Mastro’s neighbor, said she only lost power at her home for 15 minutes on Saturday.

“We were blessed,” Gray said. “The worse thing for us is the cable TV went out. We consider ourselves lucky.”

Mastro said she lost a few window screens.

Because her home lost power, dinner at the Mastro home Saturday night was by candlelight. The menu included sliced tomatoes and cake. The family had more food in the refrigerator, but didn’t want to open the doors for fear it would let in warm air and hasten the thawing process.

“We had some water in the backyard, but we’ve had it a lot worse,” Mastro said. “I am very thankful, I am.”

Mastro’s family managed to buy 40 pounds of ice Sunday morning and is using that in the refrigerator and freezer until their power is restored.

there was hope that would happen soon. a green bucket truck was driving up and down streets in Pine Lakes working on lines about noon on Sunday.

Sean Ferrell and Hattie Poe were among the lucky ones too. Ferrell, 34, was staying with Poe in a home on Lambs Grove Road off Firetower Road.

aside from a little flooding in the yard, and a few lost shingles they weathered the storm pretty well, Ferrell said. Power was out, but only for a few minutes and cable television was restored when the power came back.

The day wasn’t without a few scary moments, however.

“We drove down toward Morgan’s Corner and on the way there a power line fell on the road in front of us,” Ferrell said.

The incident happened about 10 a.m. Saturday. Sunday afternoon they were sitting together on a bench overlooking the Pasquotank River in downtown Elizabeth City.

“We pretty much stayed in the house and watched the winds whipping the trees,” Poe said.

Juan Vargas (San Diego-40th) will have a resolution on the California Senate floor next week that is an attempt to stop Sempra Generation from tipping the renewable energy scales towards Mexico, and away from the Imperial County construction and renewable energy workers in his district. the Imperial Valley Jobs Preservation Resolution calls on Energy Secretary Steven Chu to reject Sempra’s application for a permit that would allow the San Diego based company to build a cross-border transmission line from a Mexican wind energy facility to the Powerlink in San Diego.

The claims on rights to jobs partly depends on geography. the Energia Sierra Juarez wind energy site in Mexico owned by Sempra that can handle up to 1,250 megawatts is 70 miles east of San Diego, and just a few miles south of the border, in La Rumorosa, Baja California. Very near the southwest corner of Imperial County. a connection to the local energy supply system in San Diego, called a “gen-tie”, will take a 2 mile line from the Mexican site to the border and a 1 mile line that connects to an East County Substation SDG&E plans on building near Jacumba.

An official Senate Energy Committee estimate on lost jobs that the project will produce in the U. S. totals 15,000. Imperial County, already holding near 27 percent in unemployment, would take 90 percent of the direct job losses.

Convinced a permit approval would be a serious mistake, after introducing the resolution on August 16, Vargas said, “I’m urging the federal government to invest in our local workforce.” He supports plans to build up the renewable energy production in the Imperial Valley, a part of the Mohave and Colorado desert areas the State of California have as a top priority for renewable energy projects.

President Obama’s policy against dependence on foreign energy sources, to Vargas, stands in clear opposition to the Sempra project. In May, 2010, Obama made an agreement with Mexican President Felipe Calderon to create a cross border electricity task force, continuing the U. S.’s work on advancing trade in renewable energies. a cross border wind energy connection in San Diego has not raised an alarm at the Energy Department.   

But, an opening for Mexican workers to move in to take American jobs on building transmission lines has been judged inconsistent with good international relations in San Diego. Any motivation to use low cost Mexican labor and escape the more strict U. S. environmental laws rubs Vargas the wrong way.

At the bottom of the committee’s resolution analysis, labor groups have added their names to support the resolution that Sen. Kevin DeLeon, a Los Angeles low wage workers advocate that was raised in Logan Heights in San Diego, helped pass the committee on a 6 to 2 vote on Thursday, August 25, and Sen. Tom Berryhill, a fourth generation farmer that represents San Joaquin County, tried to vote down in the committee.  Two AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Councils, the one in San Diego County and the one in Imperial County, support Vargas’s effort to stop the jobs spoils from going to Mexican workers on the other side of the border.

The California Labor Federation also took their position against letting jobs decline during the harsh times of the recession. Vocal spokesman Art Pulaski, a supporter of Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s jobs creation plan for the state, like Vargas, single handedly fights against the failures of the middle class that have happened when high wage jobs have left local job markets. the jobs that make comfortable living a lock are his main solution.

The Imperial Irrigation District board has voted to support the resolution.

If all the Sempra project pieces fit together, construction will start on Energia Sierra Juarez in 2012. CPUC has to give two approvals. one will go to SDG&E’s mid-April agreement with Sempra to supply San Diego residents with 156 megawatts of wind energy from the Mexican producer. the Jacumba substation project needs the other pending approval before work can move ahead.

In the 12 months before the April agreement, the SDG&E utility company signed 12 agreements for generation of a total 1,000 megawatts in Southern California.

Secretary Chu will make the decision on the Sempra permit later this year. Next week In San Diego, attentions will be on the senators in Sacramento.

Simply put: Solar Panels are built to collect UV rays from Sun and the UV rays are converted by the solar panel to electricity that can be used to power your light bulbs, refrigerators, stoves and other electrical appliances.

Some appliances use direct current (DC) from the Sun. Such appliances can be powered directly by electricity emanating from the solar panel (or pvc panels). most appliances works only with alternating current (AC) and therefore you need an Inverter to change the current from the solar panel from DC to AC. You may need a battery too to store energy for sun down and night times. For list of what you may need go to the source site referenced below.

For cost: You can get a lot of used materials (e.g. through eBay) to build your solar electricity system.

Solar energy is very promising because it is renewable, which means that you can continue getting the power you need nonstop. the sun provides a large amount of energy that artificial units cannot sufficiently give. the small part of the power stems through to the earth in the form of sunlight. the rays that deliver the energy of the sun give both heat and power that can effectively be gathered and changed to other types of energy, such as electricity. Solar steam generators use solar power generation use the power of the sun to heat water and create steam to let electrical turbines work.

Another popular method of solar power generation is through the use of photovoltaic devices. the devices are made to use photovoltaic cells or solar cells to transform solar energy into DC electricity. There are plenty of ways to collect solar energy such as through parabolic troughs, solar panels, solar dishes and solar power towers that have reflecting mirrors. A number of solar collectors are categorized as either concentrating or non-concentrating.

A solar panel is made of a series of photovoltaic cells. These convert sunlight into electricity. each panel has a rated output in watts, under ideal conditions. Generally, the higher the wattage rating, the larger and more expensive the panel.

It's worth noting that few people have ideal conditions either. Ideal solar conditions are considered to be a bright, cloudless sunny day, at sea level, at the equator. Sunlight in those conditions yields 1000 watts per square yard. but few people live in such a place, and if your local conditions are only at 40% of optimal, your 200 watt panel will only produce 80 watts.

You'll need to figure out what the total power draw of your home is; Lights, heating, cooling, appliances, entertainment system, washer & dryer, etc. You may end up investing in more efficient appliances, since new appliances are almost always cheaper than more solar capacity.

You'll also need other things in addition to the panels. Batteries (unless you only want your lights and heat to work during the day), transformers, power controllers, and so forth. I've included a link to a website that sells everything you need.

It's basically a panel of millions of solar cells (photons) that have this amazing ability to convert UV rays into electricity. the electricity is captured by wires embedded in the panels and sent through a main cable, where it goes wherever you need it to go. the cells are extremely expensive when used in large projects (such as a house), but ultimately pay off. I have friends that actually sell their excess energy from their solar panels to the electric company, and get a pay check from them every month (keep in mind though, they live in a desert climate).

I would suggest waiting before buying though. the technology is bound to become more efficient and affordable with the amount of research going into this field. Wait before you end up buying thousands of dollars worth of solar equipment only to have them become obsolete in a few years.

Solar electricity panels consist of 2 different types of semiconductor stuck together. one has excess electrons, one has few electrons. When they stick together the electrons go from the excess electron side and stick to ions in the other side, creating an electric field.

When light hits a semiconductor, electrons are knocked off atoms and can move about the crystal. in a solar cell, you have an electric field (as explained above) and the electrons are pushed in one direction. Electrons moving in one direction = electricity!

They are currently very expensive and unless you have very expensive electricity or the government gives you subsidies then they're probably not worth buying. Germany and the UK now have 'Feed in Tariffs' that pay you loads of money and make them worthwhile.

You need a panel and an inverter. the inverter turns the DC electricity from the panel into AC electricity you can use in the home. When it's sunny your panels will make electricity that you can use – if you can't use it then you may have either 'grid tie' the system which sends the extra electricity into the grid and your power company will pay you for it. otherwise you can have batteries which store the electricity for you to use at a later date.

In general, 'grid tie' systems are better because batteries cost lots and you don't necessarily get bad rates for your solar electricity if you sell off the stuff you're not using.

First when talking about Solar we need to discuss the different applications. There is Solar electric called Photo-voltaic or PV for short. There are several types here to but mostly they work the same. When the sun hits the panel it starts electrons in motion which creates DC current. here you have the option to convert it to AC by way of an inverter or use DC appliances. the main difference in the different types is efficiency and new technology is creating more efficient panels as we speak.
Solar thermal use the sun's heat to create thermal energy (heat) for water. You may hear it called Solar Hot Water. When I started installing Solar we called these DHW (domestic hot water) systems. These panels are either a flat plate glazed, evacuated tube, or a plastic panel (used to heat swimming pools.)

The best thing you can do is use a combination of alternative energy sources! because you cannot rely on just 1. look into backyard wind turbines, solar roof panels, and even hydroelectricity!

I am from India. Though here it is illegal to use alternative energy sources at home, without notifying it to the government. in us, i dnt have any idea about this. but yeah, it does help wen the main source suppy is off. usually alternative enery sources are cheaper and benificial to use at home, but ya..it can take time more than usual/ Like cookin food in solar cooker can take 45 minutes, where as in LPG, or natural gas.. it takes just 10 minutes. So if one is looking to keep a backup//its very useful at times.

There are several types of solar systems; solar water heating, grid-tied solar electric, off-grid solar electric, grid tied solar electric with battery backup. You get the idea. Different types are good for different situations.

I highly recommend starting with a solar water heating system. this provides up to 75% of your hot water, rather than heating it all with your electric, gas, or oil water heater. it preheats the water so your water heater has to work much much less, saving you a lot of energy, depending on how you heat your water, up to 30% of your current energy use.

Next I suggest energy conservation. the best way to save money on your electric bill is to use less. For every $1 you spend on conservation, that's equal to about $4 of solar. Much cheaper to save electricity than to make it.

Then look into a grid-tied solar electric system. this will allow you to make some power, based on how much money you want to spend on the system, and continue buying the rest from the electric company. that way you don't have to have a huge system with batteries.

Get your electric bill out and see how many kilowatt hours (kwh) you currently use. To date there are four main types of renewable energy that we can produce: wind power, solar power, hydro power, and geothermic power.

Wind Power:

Solar Power:

To speed up the process, water is sometimes pumped back into the geysers to make more steam, which is then used to drive the turbines once again, thus making it an endless cycle.

SHAH ALAM: QL Resources Bhd is looking at selling biogas-generated electricity from its palm oil mill in Tawau, Sabah, under the feed-in tariff system for Malaysia’s renewable energy sector, which is due to be implemented in December.

The system will allow domestically produced electricity from renewable energy resources to be sold to power utilities at a fixed premium price for a specific duration.

QL’s core divisions are marine products manufacturing, integrated livestock farming and palm oil activities.

Managing director Chia Song Kun said the biogas energy facility at one of the group’s two palm oil mills in Sabah would be commissioned this week. the biogas comes from the effluent resulting from the milling process.

“a 50-tonne-per-hour mill can generate two megawatts of electricity.

“every palm oil mill can sell electricity if they do this (biogas energy). If this project is successful, we may look at selling green power to the Sabah government,” Chia said after the group’s EGM yesterday.

He added that the excess biogas-generated electricity could be used to power other utilities at each mill as well as for the the production of palm pellet biofuel, which is produced from palm oil mill by-products such as empty fruit bunches.

On the murky economic outlook, Chia said QL’s performance in the near future might be affected slightly by potentially lower demand for its premium surimi (processed fish paste) products.

“We think there will be weaker demand for higher grade surimi,” he said.

About 30% of QL’s marine product sales are from exports to countries such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Taiwan and Vietnam.

“We are still aiming for double-digit growth this year although the economic environment is not favourable,” Chia said.

For its first quarter ended June 30, the group posted a 3.7% year-on-year jump in net profit to RM27.8mil while revenue grew 18.2% to RM454.57mil.

QL attributed the growth in turnover to improved crude palm oil prices, better volume of palm oil fruits processed and higher unit value of feed raw materials.

Exactly whether we want to or not we are dependant on Europe for our energy for the immediate future and cannot avoid this as we are along way off being independant for our energy needs. Huge leaps in technology can happen in just a few years, so any future solution will probably be a combination of current and as yet unproven methods. the main thing is that we regain control of such an important resource.

Neither party intends to cease trading with Europe completely, but as fuel prices increase, some goods will become more economical to produce at home.

I'm no professional, but have you ever used an electric lawnmower and a gas-operated one?

If you make the electric lawnmower try to clear a spot with thick heavy grass, the electric simply won't pull it because the power usually lacks as opposed to a gas-operated one. In order for the electric one to pull enough power, it needs a lot of electricity. I'm guessing this is the same for electric cars, as I've heard on several of those car shows that they perform pretty lousy when it comes to speed.

Not too mention that these types of engines are usually more expensive to construct.

The simple answer is – heat.

Many hybrids use this system, but not all of the energy from the turning wheels is converted into electricity stored in the battery. Friction, braking, and resistance in the wiring all convert some of that energy to heat. When the energy is discharged by the battery, resistance in the wiring and friction in the wheels generate more heat, thus more loss of energy.

This is why where is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine (one that uses and produces all the power it needs).

I own a Toyota Prius. This car regenerates electricity from the wheels when you are coasting or when you apply brakes. Additionally you can place the car in a back gear that slows it down on hills or when you are coming up to a red light. This back gear directs the energy from your spinning wheels to a generator that produces electricity. The energy is then stored in the car's battery cells and is used when you accelerate. In a way this is a self sustaining condition. However, the electricity is consumed by the electric motor very quickly. The electric motor provides a great amount of torque and will get the car moving very quickly but, it consumes the electricity stored in the battery so gasoline engine power is required to sustain teh momentum. So, although the Prius does regenerate electrical power, it is not enough to completely sustain the locomotion of the vehicle. look for newer hybrid type vehicles coming in the next couple of years. Soon, there will be one that you will plug into an electrical outlet at your home or businesses that support electeric cars. You will be able to utilize this stored energy to make trips across town to distances as much as 150 miles without using any gasoline. Another note: Driving technique is very important to proper use of a hybrid vehicle. You must anticipate opportunities to allow your car to coast to stops and utilizize the back gearing to recoperate the energy into your batteries.

Well, it would still require energy for the generator to be turned, no matter how small, plus for the generators to be effective at all, they would each have to be roughly the size and weight of a conventional gasoline generator. (over 100LB) So, the energy required to turn the generators and to even move them would outweigh the energy produced by them a great deal, since the gasoline engine would still have to push the car's body along, along with the generators. Trust me, it's been though of before and it would really be energy wasted. The first rule of electricity is: "You can't get something from nothing (or something less than what you're going for)"

If they spun all the time however, your gas mileage would go down, because it would burn more gas to spin the electric motors.

So it is only effective for them to work when the car is braking or coasting to a stop.

If you like the principle of generating electricity may I suggest you look at the Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid (with the Nav Screen) or the Lexus 400h. I have driven all 3 and the screen really informs you how to maximize your electricity generation.

It also constantly records your instant gas mileage as well as a graph showing your best previous gas mileage. I always feel like I'm "driving for high score"

And with dependence on foreign oil and global warming, everyone should be driving this way.

When a generator is under a load it is much harder to turn.what you suggest would work but the generator may act like a "brake" under a heavy load. theres ways to overcome this though.

they can but americans arent buying them. the electric generator technology you are speaking of is what everyone else calls hybrid technology and there are already countless models on the market, while they are gaining popularity there only a fraction of the overall automotive market in america. every car absolutely can be made with the saving techology but maybe americans do not want to be bothered. i am hopefuly that the meaningful fuel efficiency increases being pushed through congress and the senate will have a profound impact on developing new technology in cars and seeing many more hybrids, and alternative vehicles on the road.

The good news for the seven states is not only that unnecessary costs have been avoided during the political boom of ‘green’ energy. The benefit is also that artificial bubble jobs are not on a death watch as they are in other states that now face ‘green’-energy retrenchment.

Bad Wind

William Yeatman, an energy policy analyst for the Competitive Enterprise Institute, contends that Southeastern states do not have as much renewable energy potential as the rest of the country. “The Southeast has the lowest wind energy potential of all regions, and wind is the energy source that is used to achieve virtually all renewable electricity mandates in the U.S.”

However, Yeatman says that even though the Southeast has limited renewable energy potential, that does not mean renewable energy mandates are a good idea in the Northwest, Northeast or the Southwest. rather, “It is to say that renewable energy is even more uneconomical in the southeast than in the rest of the country.”

Louisiana’s Politically clean Energy

Robert Bradley of the Institute for Energy Research affirms that, “It is a competitive advantage that Louisiana is energy clean when it comes to politically forced energies.”

This competitive advantage is evident in the prices residents in Louisiana and other Southeastern states pay for energy. The Southeast has some of the lowest electricity bills in the country, thus making politicians skeptical of imposing government mandates, which would raise costs for power companies and raise prices for consumers.

Walter Block, economics professor at Loyola University, claims that customers should have a choice between traditional and renewable energy sources. “Nuclear, coal, oil and gas are far cheaper than wind, water, solar and geothermal,” he said.. “The only reason the latter are used at all is because of heavy subsidies, and taxes on the former.”

In 2009, Louisiana ranked 30th in the country for renewable energy by generating only 4 percent of their energy from renewable sources, mainly from wood waste and hydro conventional plants.

However, the U.S. Department of Energy recently awarded Louisiana State University $997,000 for a project to evaluate the feasibility of an advanced geothermal energy project in the Pelican state. A million dollars here, a million there; such money biases the market away from the energies that consumers naturally choose and companies naturally research.

One can only hope that such grants will cease as energy’s contribution to a balanced federal budget.

It has been heralded by many as the future of eco-friendly construction, touted as a template for responsible home building and promoted as showcase for alternative energy.

Turns out, the Green idea House may also block neighbors’ views.

And so a solar saga is flaring in Hermosa Beach among the eco-minded homeowner reconstructing the energy-efficient oasis and the neighbors who say that although he’s killed their sprawling ocean views, the city is to blame.

Robert Fortunado began a landmark retrofit of his Prospect Avenue home, dubbed the Green idea House, in October. since then, Hermosa Beach city officials have proclaimed the project to be a shining example of the future of cost-effective, eco-friendly home building and construction.

Once completed, the home will be among the first private residences in the South Bay to be entirely energy-neutral. the home, which came with a construction budget of $400,000, will be stocked with energy-efficient lighting and appliances. An organic garden will sprout from the backyard.

And to harness the sun, 27 solar panels will sit on two of the multilevel home’s roofs.

But neighbors, pointing to where the solar panels will be, contend the home has come at a significant price to them: their world-class views.

So they are lobbying Hermosa Beach officials to develop a policy that will put limits on how high solar panels can extend above the city’s already-established restrictions on building heights.

“The value of our property is the view. now that’s gone,” said Dana Korbin, a 30-year resident of Golden Avenue who lives directly behind Fortundao’s home. “I would hate to have this happen to someone else.”

The Hermosa Beach City Council adopted California’s Solar Rights Act in 2008, which was crafted by state lawmakers to promote alternative energy use. Among the stipulations in the legislation is that local governments cannot restrict the installation of solar energy systems based on aesthetics. Under the law, restrictions only can be placed on solar panel installations if they pose health or safety risks.

Hermosa Beach city officials maintain that by not establishing a height restriction, the city is avoiding potential lawsuits.

“We’re not looking to circumvent or change state law,” said Mayor Howard Fishman, who has 14 solar panels installed on the roof of his own home. “We’re in compliance. That’s a safe place to be.”

Rich Halliburton, another Golden Avenue resident who has views of the Peninsula and Catalina blocked by the construction of Fortunado’s 2,100-square-foot home, was the first to publicly raise the issue, appearing in front the city’s planning commission on Aug. 16 and asking the town to develop a new solar policy.

He argues that the city adopted the state solar law too quickly before implementing any height restrictions.

“In Hermosa Beach’s rush to be ahead of the curve, this is what we end up with,” Halliburton said.

Unlike Hermosa, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach do have restrictions on how high solar panels can extend from roofs. Manhattan Beach has a 12-inch restriction above the city’s existing roofline, while the Redondo Beach Municipal Code allows for a maximum 4-foot projection above height limits for roof equipment.

“The city of Manhattan Beach established what we thought was reasonable limit,” said Richard Thompson, the city’s development director.

Hermosa’s story comes as solar panels, which convert sunlight to electricity through crystal silicone `solar’ cells, become increasingly popular among eco-friendly homeowners and those looking to save on energy costs.

And as alternative energy sources become increasingly popular – and more affordable – environmentally conscious homeowners have clashed with their neighbors and homeowner associations over the use of solar panels.

In Palos Verdes Estates, a solar panel installer won approval from city officials in 2009 to install an array of solar panels on a home near Palos Verdes Golf Club after the city’s Art Jury, a quasi-governmental body that reviews building plans, rejected the permit because of the aesthetic qualities of the panels.

And although disputes over view obstructions can be relatively common in a region where home values are closely tied to views they offer, the solar issue in Hermosa is unusual because it raises the question about whether homeowners with dazzling views should be compensated for their loss if their views are obstructed by alternative energy equipment.

Hermosa’s elected leaders have aggressively pushed eco-friendly initiatives – waiving permit fees for solar panel and wind turbine installations – yet said they realize sweeping ocean views come at a premium and recognize the allure they have on both potential homebuyers and longtime residents. Fishman said that in the face of state law, there is little city officials can do.

“We’re doing what we can do to provide incentives to residents and businesses to go green,” Fishman said. “Yes, there may be some disputes. I think anything you try to do to reduce the carbon footprint may get controversy. All we can do is hope people see the bigger picture.”

Fortunado said that placing height restrictions on solar panels could deter people from using the alternative energy source.

“The fact is, there just aren’t enough people adopting solar, period,” Fortunado said.

But neighbors argue that until a height restriction is put in place, more residents could be losing one of the city’s main draws. Korbin said the construction of Fortunado’s home has caused her so much concern that she is moving to Redondo Beach.

“I don’t know if they’re going to be clean or if they’re going to cause glare,” Korbin said of the panels. “They’ve knocked off hundred of thousands of dollars off my property value.”

Fortunado, who has owned the property for 16 years, has spent the last several weeks on the defensive, arguing that his new home will be built under the city’s 25-foot height limit, and only two solar panels – when tilted at 15 degrees – will breech the limit, and by just several inches. the solar panels have yet to be installed, and Fortunado expects the home to be completed by the end of the year.

“I think we were the center and the subject of a firestorm,” said Fortunado, adding that he has reached out to residents to explain his construction plan and worked to keep as much of his neighbors views as possible. “Anytime you lose something you’ve had for 16 years, that kind of reaction is understandable.”

Hoku Corporation (NASDAQ:HOKU) gained 0.10 (5.29%) to $1.99.

MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc. (NYSE:WFR) shares added 0.24 (4.12%) to $6.06.

Yingli Green Energy Hold. Co. Ltd. (NYSE:YGE) gained 0.31 (5.89%) to $5.57 after it was upgraded today by HSBC Securities (NYSE:HBC) to neutral from underweight.

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:STP) shares fell 0.03 (-0.59%) to $5.07. The company trimmed its full-year revenue forecast to $3.2-$3.4 billion. it also warned it could lose $30 million this quarter from hedging and foreign exchange moves.

Suntech expects photovoltaic shipments to rise 15 percent this quarter from the previous three months, but improved demand for solar panels will come at a cost.

In its PR battle, ethanol has a carbon problem. It’s widely debated how much CO2 is emitted during the growing and refining of ethanol. But this much is certain: The debate continues, and it’s been a challenge for the industry.To find a solution, Tim Burns took a different look at the problem. Rather than seeing the carbon that is emitted from an ethanol plant as waste, he sees it as a commodity. That’s because he’s in the algae business, and algae love to feast on carbon. so on this particular farm in Shenendoah, Iowa, every day is Thanksgiving. Burns leads BioProcess Algae, which has teamed with Green Plains Renewable Energy, for the world’s first co-located algae-ethanol plant. The carbon emitted during the production process is pumped into bioreactors where the algae will grow. for every unit of algal biomass produced, two units of CO2 are absorbed into the growth process. The dried algae is then used to supply, not a car via biofuel, but livestock via feed.

Burns is interested in making his algae-based business profitable, and right now that’s through creating feed. Eventually, as profits clear room for a large-scale operation, the hope is that using algae to create biofuels will then become feasible. in the meantime, it’s assisting ethanol with its carbon emission problem. It’s all part of the link between food, feed and fuel.“What you’re really doing is you’re valuing carbon,” said Burns. “everybody who has a fermentation process and an emission of a CO2, that’s a wasted resource. If you can make a valuable product out of it, everybody who has that emission will look at that emission as an opportunity and not a headache.”Right now, the operation has moved into its second phase. and it was such a big deal that U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was there to give the keynote at the dedication this spring. The best line of the day came from Vilsack: “this is a remarkable project … I don’t understand it totally, but it’s really neat to look at.” What he was seeing was a series of vertical commercial-sized reactors drawing from the ethanol plant’s carbon emissions. They’ve been running for about a year now, and they’ve produced a few tons of ash-free dried wholesale algae. The company is currently in discussions for an offtake agreement on the feedstock. Once that is in place, they hope to begin the process of building up the algae production to manufacturing scale.“Once we get these acres down and we have a profitable farm on our hands, then everything changes,” said Burns. “you have to get these first farms down. That’s the Valley of Death every industry has to cross.”To get there, Burns says he is meeting with food companies, oil executives and utilities. he said they see the potential in algae, not only as a biofuel, but as a way to offset carbon. Burns himself sees a day when an algae system may exist alongside coal-fired and natural gas plants as a way to offset emissions. and his company is actively looking to build partnerships with the hundreds of ethanol producing plants across the country.“They key is a pathway to profitability,” said Burns. “[Across the industry,] a lot of initial money was put down for a direct biofuel replacement. We see this is a co-product business. when there are a number of farms down, at that point you’ll have enough acreage to get into the fuels market.”

FOLSOM, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– a member-owned utility cooperative in Nevada has taken the first step to join the California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO) and the agreement it entered into was given the go-ahead by the ISO Board of Governors today, August 25, 2011.

Linking up with Valley Electric Association’s transmission system, based in Pahrump, Nevada, is a very efficient route for getting remote desert solar resources on the grid. There are nearly three gigawatts of solar resources planned in Valley Electric’s backyard, some of which are located in California and have power purchase agreements with California utilities. the abundant renewable power is sought after by utilities to help meet California’s 33% renewables portfolio standard (RPS).

The remade Connecticut clean Energy Fund will launch new programs in the coming months to make clean technology more affordable and bolster the energy industry in the state.

After two months of delays due to the state budget uncertainty, the newly created clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority soon will have a full board of directors able to make decisions, raise capital and institute progressive initiatives designed to help business and residents upgrade to environmentally friendly energy.

“This is a model that is going to do much more to drive innovation,” said Dan Esty, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection. “our hope is to turn Connecticut into the leader on clean energy in the country.”

After the Connecticut General Assembly approved energy policy reform legislation in June, the old Connecticut clean Energy Fund was scrapped in favor of a more autonomous model less constrained by the state’s unsteady finances.

The Connecticut clean Energy Fund, formed in 2000, was funded by a charge on ratepayers’ electric bills and later by proceeds from the Northeast cap-and-trade system, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. that funding totaled about $32 million per year, which the fund could use to subsidize clean energy projects such as solar or fuel cell installations.

The problem with this model was the fund annually ran out of money and had to choose which projects received grants. The funding almost always went to solar projects. The program was administered by a handful of staff members operating within Connecticut Innovations, the state’s quasi-public technology investment organization.

The new CEFIA is its own quasi-public agency tasked with making the state a leader in clean energy, moving beyond simple funding of projects. its main source of financing remains the $32 million per year from ratepayers and RGGI, but the organization can issue bonds, secure federal grants, receive philanthropic donations and raise private capital to accomplish its goals.

“It gives us a great deal of flexibility in obtaining sources of financing,” said Dave Ljungquist, CEFIA associate director for project development.

CEFIA will be led by an 11-member board of directors, but six of those seats were vacant as of Aug. 17, preventing the agency from forming a quorum and making decisions on various programs. with Gov. Dannel Malloy preoccupied in reaching a concession deal with state employee unions, the agency appointments were held up.

Esty said he expects the final appointments to be made in the next several days. CEFIA will start making decisions on programs in the fall and be in full working order by the end of the year.

Freeing up a large chunk of the fund’s $32 million are the new zero-emissions and low-emissions renewable energy credit programs. Large-scale commercial projects that would have gone to the clean Energy Fund for grants now will get funding directly through the utilities via ZRECs and LRECs.

This gives CEFIA more funding to focus on other programs, designed to help smaller businesses and residents to convert to clean energy.

“CEFIA is going to be developing a lot of new exciting programs,” said Matthew Stone, energy and environmental associate with Hartford law firm Pullman & Comley LLC. “It will help out the business community.”

A major obstacle for businesses and homeowners in converting to clean energy technology is the large upfront cost of the technology. A solar photovoltaic array or an energy efficient hot water heater will pay back the costs over time through energy savings, but the businesses or homeowner must still bear the burden of purchasing the system.

CEFIA wants to develop a loan program where businesses and people wanting to install new technology can receive no-interest or low-interest financing to pay for the upfront costs and have the monthly payments be below the monthly energy savings, Ljungquist said.

“that will blow the market wide open,” Ljungquist said.

The agency is developing pilot programs for businesses to install combined heat and power system, and for farmers to install biomass digesters. each program will receive $2 million, enough for five businesses and 10 farms.

From the clean Energy Fund, the agency is keeping a residential solar photovoltaic program, but it is tasked with higher goals. CEFIA is required to help fund 30 megawatts of residential solar electric over the next 10 years, equivalent to installing 1,000 home arrays each year. In its best year, the clean Energy Fund never provided grants for more than 700 projects each year.

“that is going to be a significant boost,” Ljungquist said.

CEFIA also plans to work with the state’s utilities and their Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, as CEFIA tasks now include energy efficient projects. by joining with utilities such as United Illuminating and Connecticut Light & Power, the agency should be able to leverage more private capital for its programs.

But in creating CEFIA, the state didn’t do everything it needed to make clean energy more affordable, said State Sen. John Fonfara, D-Hartford, who co-authored the legislation creating the new agency.

CEFIA is a strong start on making Connecticut a progressive clean energy state, but the General Assembly should have approved more funding than just the $32 million from ratepayers and RGGI, said Fonfara. The agency needs more dedicated sources of funding from the state to truly accomplish its goals.

“Electric ratepayers shouldn’t be the only source of funding to move us off foreign countries and fossil fuels,” Fonfara said.

A key idea behind forming CEFIA was to leverage all this funding for clean energy projects into a creating a bigger clean energy industry in the state, Fonfara said. As more projects receive funding, eventually new companies should form or move into Connecticut, bolster production, attract talent, develop the workforce, create a supply chain and spark research and development into new, cheaper clean technologies.

More funding can make these more of these projects happen faster, Fonfara said. In the 2012 legislative session, Fonfara said he intends to create additional sources of CEFIA funding.

The agency still is in a state of flux and it soon will have a better understanding of how best to accomplish its goals as the board seats fill up, programs begin and the financing arm ramps up, Esty said.

Providing financing through CEFIA to make clean technology affordable is fundamental to the state’s energy policy goals, Esty said.

“It is a model that is already attracting attention from around the country and the world,” Esty said.

More numerous, however, are the advantages. They include but are not limited to the following: the preservation of our natural world. a wind power generator is eco-friendly. it does not create pollution, which poisons the environment. Wind energy is free. and governments provide incentives to purchase and install generators such as tax breaks and rebates. Wind power is source of renewable energy unlike coal, oil, and wood. with the knowledge discovered in this article we should all be using some amount of wind power generation or at least purchasing power from green providers.

Small wind turbines are growing in popularity and Home Depot will begin selling them in stores in some of the windier parts of the country.

Arizona-based Southwest Windpower, one of the pioneers and leading manufacturers of small wind turbines, says its Skystream 3.7 turbine will be available at stores in Texas, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and California, and will expand to other states.

Southwest says the turbine is the first compact, all-inclusive grid-connected personal wind turbine with controls and inverter built in.

Designed for use on farms, homes and businesses, the turbine can produce up to 400 kWh of clean electricity per month depending on the wind resource and site location. The average US home uses about 930 kwh per month according to government figures.

The Skystream 3.7 price is based on where it’s installed. a survey of websites that sell it shows it ranges from $6,000 to $9,000 before incentives. Customers may be eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit and local incentives available through state governments and utilities.

In 2009, close to 10,000 small wind turbines were sold in the US, according to the American Wind Energy Association – up from only 2,100 turbines in 2001.

However, because modern, residential wind power is relatively new in the US, permitting and zoning rules are an obstacle in many parts of the country, according to a recent story in USA Today.

Some cities, like Boston, are leading the way by adopting codes to clarify issues like installation height and noise requirements.

James Hunt, the city’s chief of environmental and energy services, told USA Today that small scale wind is part of a broader vision the city has for renewable energy.

“we do envision the day when we will have houses that are super efficient, that are generating renewable energy through solar and building-integrated wind, and they are producing more energy than they consume and exporting energy into the grid,” he says.

A lot of people use jigsaws to cut the PVC pipe. this is fine, but it’s a lot of work. the right tool is a reciprocating saw, sawzall. whatever you want to call it, with a wood and nail blade. the aggressive teeth easily cut through the PVC while not melting the plastic and gumming up the blade. You’ll have to apply a lot less force and you’ll have more control over your cut. Just make sure to use the fastest setting of your reciprocating saw, and secure the pipe. If you don’t have a reciprocating saw, a circular saw will work as well, but it takes a little more skill. If you absolutely must use a jigsaw, just go slow with an aggressive toothed blade.

Don’t Just Leave the Rough PVC Edges

Sand down the edges to reduce drag. the less drag you have the more electricity your PVC windmill is going to make. with a little effort you can make a nice foil on your PVC blades that will make them spin easier. You want your blades to spin. You want them to spin as fast as they can with minimal drag. this is why the blades taper down to the tip. the tip of the blade is moving the fastest through the air and the less blade, the less drag. Taper your blades and at a bare minimal, sand off the rough edges from the cutting of the PVC. You can shape the blades further to greatly increase their efficiency.

MANILA, Philippines — it was surprising to read that both the Board of Investments (BoI) and Meralco have called for a delay in the implementation of the Renewable Energy Act, one of the most promising pieces of legislation to meet the country’s energy needs which was enacted in 2008. The development of the Philippines’ renewable energy sources – such as solar, wind, and geothermal – will be a major source of foreign investment.

This move also contradicts a government policy. The Aquino administration has already announced that it would push the development of renewable energy sources, and invited foreign investors to enter the industry.

And the idea that renewable energy costs too much is short-sighted and does not take into account the actual record of renewable energy projects that have been developed in Europe, most notably in Germany. Besides initially creating jobs, and having a positive effect on climate change by reducing carbon emissions, renewable energy sources pay off, financially, in the long term.

The European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines and the European National Chambers issued a joint statement to the effect that the request to delay implantation of the Renewable Energy Act would adversely affect future foreign investments, send the wrong signal to potential investors, and suggest that the government is not consistent and may approve a policy and then backtrack on it later.

The European Chamber of Commerce statement also warned the government that if it changes its policy, it loses the trust of foreign investors, not only those interested in the power sector, but also in other sectors, such as agri-businesses.

The focus should be on the long-term gains rather than short-term rates. since the country has already announced that it is developing renewable energy projects, which provide higher efficiency as well as reduced carbon emissions, the focus should be on the jobs that will be created by renewable energy development and the increased efficiency which will, in the long term, bring down costs to the consumer.

As a final point, the European Chambers suggest that instead of delaying the implementation of the Renewable Energy Act, energy conservation and energy efficiency measures should be strictly practiced to reduce costs.

"The design must be original" is a real problem. Windmills have been used for centuries to grind corn or wheat, and pump water, and for nearly a hundred years at least to generate electricity.

Perhaps you could be original by making the design more specific – for example, designing a windmill that would charge an iPod when you blew on the fan?

IRENE charged into New England yesterday as it weakened to a tropical storm after racing across New York city leaving the East Coast stunned, with at least 16 dead, widespread flooding and power outages for four million homes and businesses.

As waves continued pounding the Connecticut shore east of America’s biggest city, New York city mayor Michael Bloomberg lifted the evacuation order for the 400,000 residents in low-lying areas, mainly Lower Manhattan Queens and Brooklyn. New England residents were now feeling the brunt of the diminished but still-dangerous storm. It was expected to move over eastern Canada last night. Forecasters said that Irene, while diminished in strength, was still massive and powerful, with powerful winds extending more than 300 miles from the centre. Before Irene hit New York, its winds weakened to 65mph after its journey up the East Coast, where it dropped a foot of rain on North Carolina and Virginia. The National Hurricane Centre downgraded the storm after its winds fell below 74mph, the threshold for a hurricane. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said President Barack Obama was briefed this morning and instructed administration officials to continue to be aggressive in their efforts to deal with the storm and its aftermath. Napolitano said the worst of the storm has passed for most areas, but cautioned that communities in Irene’s path should continue to be vigilant even though the storm had weakened. as the eye of the storm blew through America’s largest city and Long Island to the east, it pushed an Atlantic storm surge toward New York. Briny water from New York Harbour submerged parts of a promenade at the base of the island of Manhattan. a foot of water rushed over the wall of a marina in front of the New York Mercantile Exchange, where gold and oil are traded. The huge storm had threatened 65 million people on the Atlantic coast, estimated as the largest number of Americans ever affected by a single storm. New York was eerily quiet as the storm hit. In a city where many don’t own cars, the population stayed indoors. The entire transit system was shut down because of weather for the first time ever. The city’s airports were closed, with more than 9,000 flights cancelled. Broadway shows, baseball games and other events were all cancelled or postponed. as the centre of the storm passed over Central Park at midmorning, floodwater reached the wheel wells of some cars in Manhattan, and more streamed into the streets of Queens. Still, the storm didn’t come close to inflicting the kind of catastrophic damage that had been feared in the city. The September 11 museum, a centrepiece of the rebuilding of the World Trade Centre site, said on Twitter that none of its memorial trees were lost. Irene made landfall just after dawn yesterday near Cape Lookout, North Carolina, at the southern end of the Outer Banks. Shorefront hotels and houses were lashed with waves, two piers were destroyed and at least one hospital was forced to run on generator power. But as day broke today, surprisingly light damage was reported in many places, mostly consisting of downed trees and power lines. Officials warned of the possibility of severe flooding over the next few days as excess water makes its way into creeks and rivers. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett cautioned: “The rivers may not crest until Tuesday or Wednesday. this isn’t just a 24-hour event.” Irene caused flooding from North Carolina to Delaware, both from the 7ft waves it pushed into the coast and from heavy rain. In New Jersey, the Oyster Creek nuclear plant, just a few miles from the coast, shut down as a precaution as Irene closed in. The deaths blamed on Irene included two children. four other people were killed by falling trees — two in separate Virginia incidents, one in North Carolina and one in Maryland. a surfer and another beach-goer in Florida were killed as heavy waves battered the coast.

Imagine the sky all across filled with strange, rotating machines. well, alternative energy developers are planning exactly that. the wind turbines you see out in the fields or in the backyard might just be rendered useless if these things take to the skies. Planned to be positioned in the skies, sometimes as high as 15,000 feet in the air, these ‘Flying Wind Generators’ are aiming high, and if they manage to harness even one percent of the jet-stream winds, it could be enough energy to light up the whole planet. Here are a few concepts for flying wind generators which might literally blow you away.

1. Flying Wind Turbines

Sky Wind Power and Magenn Power are the two prominent agencies rooting to cough up the first of these machines. Sky Wind has in mind a 1,100 pound Flying Electric Generator which claims to be capable of producing power for as cheap as 2 cents per kilowatt hour, while soaring above 15,000 feet in the air. This kite-like structure will be kept afloat with four rotors at the points of an H-shaped frame. the spinning rotors will transmit the electricity through aluminum cables tethered to the frame.

2. Magenn Air Rotors

Another company, Magenn Power has something called the Magenn Power Air Rotor in the works. This wind generator is helium filled and rotates around a horizontal axis. the transmitted electricity can be used immediately. while the FEG aims at working at extremely high levels, the M.a.R.S.intends to keep itself based around 600 feet, and turn at speeds ranging from 4 mph to greater than 60 mph.

3. MARS – a wind turbine that is up in air

The MARS is not like other wind generators. instead of being a bladed, two-dimensional structure, it is a closed cylinder. the advantages of being a closed cylinder are its ability to start at low speeds, and have rotors which vary in sizes at a considerably cheaper rate than other wind generators. the MARS can also float above tree lines for getting across great wind and doesn’t need vast amounts of open space to be deployed.

4. Joby Energy tests high-altitude, wind turbine prototype

Joby Energy is testing its wind turbines which can produce around 800 terawatts and is powered by a 30KW system which resembles an airplane. the structure is suspended vertically in air with the aid of a channel of turbines. once set to work, the system moves circularly to come in the path of cross-winds. the tether later transmits the electricity back to the frame. the company intends to unleash trials of a 100KW very soon in the future.

5. Kite farm offers parasailing while producing energy

Keeping the high-tech rotors and daunting flying turbines at bay, this is something which promises to engage adventure seekers and, well, in turn, also generate energy. Colombian landscape architect studio Paisajes Emergentes has devised a way which involves kites, a grid, and occasionally, even people. what they plan to do is set up an energy producing kite farm on a beach in Abu Dhabi.

Sounds weird? the idea is to set out around 200 kites and tether them across a 60 meter grid. these kites will convert wind into electricity with the help of wind-belt generators, which might light up 600 homes! They’ve estimated an average of 6,200 kw-hours a year of electricity from each kite! the park will be open to visitors who can merrily strap themselves to the kites and go para-sailing above the beach! do it for the energy!

Although the initial plans were for construction to begin this past winter and to be finished by the fall, Department of Public Works Director Albert Bangert said construction is finally under way.

“The construction company is in full activity,” he said. “The plan is to install the turbine this winter, do the testing and final commission and have it spinning by Earth Day in late April.”

The delayed construction timetable was partially due to the financing trouble, Bangert said, but also the permitting specifications, which took longer than anticipated.

The turbine will be owned and operated by Scituate Wind LLC, a company created with Solaya Energy LLC and principals of Palmer Capital Corporation in 2009.

The town had initially approved the lease of the land in April 2009s Town Meeting, allowing the company to operate the turbine on the property for 15 years. The town has the option to renew the lease for two consecutive five-year terms.

Scituate officials estimate that the turbine will provide half of the town’s energy. Combined with the solar array that is to go on the landfill, by next year, 100 percent of the town’s energy needs will come from renewable sources.

“All of the town’s electricity in all of our schools, police station, town hall, all the electricity in street lights, water plant, sewer plant, harbormaster, it’s half of our total electric bill. And the solar field is another half of our electricity,” Bangert said.

The company pays $1 a year to lease the land, and in turn offers to sell all of the electricity generated to the town at a lower rate than the energy produced by National Grid.

It’s an endeavor that will ultimately save the town an estimated $3 million over the next 15 years.

“And if conditions are favorable to us in 2026, we have the option to extend the lease for an additional 10 years,” Bangert said.

According to Gordon Deane, the President of palmer Capital, the Scituate project will hopefully become a measuring stick for other communities.

“I would like to encourage all South Shore communities, to consider renewable energy projects,” Deane said.

The president said he attempted to get similar initiatives started in Cohasset, where Palmer Capital is located, to no avail.

Still, he is hopeful that renewable energy will become the way of the future. “Scituate is hosting the turbine but is also getting the benefits,” he said. “While some people don’t like the visual, their town is saving money as well as generating renewable power.”

Palmer Capital is also attempting a similar project in Fair Haven, Conn.

For institutions in the Federal and MUSH (Municipalities, Universities, Schools, and Hospitals) sectors, the main barriers are lack of capital and expertise.  Lack of capital arises because such institutions traditionally consider energy to be an operating expense, not a capital expense, while clean energy projects usually require an initial capital expenditure in return for ongoing energy savings.  Lack of expertise arises simply because finding the best energy solutions is far from simple.  although there are many simple measures that an interested amateur can take, the greatest savings come from considering buildings and other facilities as integrated systems, not as collections of isolated measures.

Energy Service Companies

Ameresco, inc. (NYSE:AMRC) was founded in 2000 as an independent, one-stop shop to help Federal and MUSH institutions overcome these barriers.  Last week, I interviewed Ameresco President and CEO George Sakellaris as part of my series of articles on energy service stocks.  Sakellaris pioneered this Energy Service Company (ESCO) model while working for New England Electric System to help industrial customers reduce their power usage in 1979.  Before founding Ameresco, he founded another leading ESCO, Noresco in 1989, which is currently owned by Carrier, a division of United Technologies (NYSE:UTX).

I first became interested in the ESCO model (also known as performance contracting) in 2007, when I heard about it as part of a Western Governor’s Association Workshop on Efficient Buildings.  Then, as now, most ESCOs are arms of larger technology companies, like Noresco mentioned above, or are part of energy companies and utilities.  other publicly traded companies with ESCO arms include AECOM (NYSE:ACM), Honeywell (NYSE:HON), Chevron (NYSE:CVX), Consolidated Edison (NYSE:ED), Constellation (NYSE:CEG), Eaton (NYSE:ETN), NextEra (NYSE:NEE), Johnson Controls(NYSE:JCI), Schneider Electric (Paris:SU), and Ingersoll-Rand (NYSE:IR).

In contrast, Ameresco is independent of any equipment manufacturer or energy company, leaving them technology-agnostic and able to approach the solution from the customer’s perspective.  This independence, along with previous customer satisfaction and Ameresco’s wide expertise allows the company to win bids such as the $795 million contract to build biomass cogeneration and heating facilities at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina over the course of 19 years.  According to Sakellaris, Ameresco won this contract (the largest renewable energy performance contract so far in the United States) without being the lowest cost bidder because of their expertise and independence.   He also says Ameresco can compete on price because of low overhead.

Financial Results

The combination of a strong brand and expertise along with low overhead have contributed to strong results.  Annual revenue has grown steadily from $278 million in 2006 to $618 million in 2010, with second quarter revenue up 17% on a year earlier, matching the last five year’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR).  over the same period, earnings per share have risen at a 21% CAGR.  at the current stock price of $10.34, AMRC has a trailing P/E ratio of 14.35, which is modest considering the consensus 20% long term expected growth rate.

I am looking to make a wind driven generator. my thoughts are that if I buy a gas driven generator it has all the converters and such so I can just plug in and go.I can adapt it to wind. I can buy a gas generator without a motor. or does the gas driven one have to much torque compared to a wind generator?

Buy a fan it is cheaper, but you need a motor that turns very easily.

A fan blows air and it can be turned by air to generate electricity. it also has the windmill blades attached. it will generate AC power not DC power.

Without the motor the gas generator will NOT generate any electricity, you need the electric motor to act as a generator. there might be decent electric conversion equipment on the gas generator. You need a way to prevent the electricity from flowing back into your fan to turn it into a motor instead of a fan.

That gas driven generator has to be speed controlled at the motor to
generate the proper voltage and frequency.
Your windmill can't do that without some rather complex sensors and variable
pitch vanes which are well beyond your 'do it yourself' territory.
Your best choice for a 'home project' is an automotive alternator,/voltage regulator,
batteries, and an inverter.
All shelf hardware designed to work in a fairly wide speed range, and all the hard
engineering has already been done, tested, and reliable.

buy yourself an automobile alternator from the junk yard and you have a generator that can produce power no matter what makes it turn, either gas of wind. you control the field current of the alternator to extract as much power as the wind source is able to supply. if the load is too high and the windmill slows down you reduce the field current and thus the power output of the generator and the windmill keeps rotating at its optimal speed to extract as much power as it can from the wind.

The first point is that a wind generator only produces electricity when the wind blows. So some means of storage such as batteries would be required.

STX has commissioned its first offshore direct drive wind turbine at a demonstrion offshore windpark of Jeju island, South Korea.

The Korean Institute for Energy Research installed the STX-72 2MW turbine about 1km offshore. It is the first of several offshore projects STX said it is planning.

STX believes that its patented direct drive concept is ideal for the offshore conditions. It said key advantages include its low nacelle weight and direct drive permanent magnet generator which keeps out corrosive elements like salt and moisture, ensuring reliability and long life of electrical components.

STX Windpower chief executive KT Yoo said: “This has been a crucial project for us, and it will help the entire wind power community – this being one of the first offshore direct drive wind turbine installations worldwide. we believe our technology is ideally suited for this demanding environment, and will have considerable impact on reducing the lifetime costs of offshore wind turbine installations.

He continued: “For the success of offshore wind, lower lifetime costs and increased reliability is key, and at STX we are working hard to achieve this. there has been a lot of interest from our customers worldwide. with this installation we can provide more thorough data on the performance of our unique direct drive technology, which will help our customers as they consider future projects.”
