How do I make a homebuilt wind generator power ?

Welcome to Wind Generator Plans 101, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Does anybody know?

I really want to make a homebuilt wind generator power but have no idea how. Im a complete noob when it comes to this stuff lol

Get a Heavy Duty truck alternator, bolt a propeller to it and mount it on a pole. you now have a wind generator with a built in voltage regulator.

Attach wires to the appropriate bolts on the back of the Alternator. Attach the other end of the wires to 12 V. batteries.

Attach the 12 V. batteries to an Inverter that changes the 12 V. to 120 V. now you can power your TV, etc. until the batteries go dead and you need to recharge them.

Homebuilt wind generators are simple and easy to build. I did it myself to get power to my garage and it was cheap to build.

Log in and ask here: http://www.fieldlines.com/section/wind
They have windmill seminars from time to time.

It does not sound like a beginner project.

Why can't all automobiles be made with electric generators attached to the wheels?

This way when the wheel turns, it generates electricity to run the car and thus making the car more or less self sustaining.

well it is already more or less the case:
– your car has a generator for the battery and AC…

What you are trying to create is perpetuum mobile since the energy you take with generators, you have to create it first (mechanical energy) and you have to use it then

they could, but BUSH is to stupid and doesnt want to lose money by the profits with the gas money.

I'm no professional, but have you ever used an electric lawnmower and a gas-operated one?

If you make the electric lawnmower try to clear a spot with thick heavy grass, the electric simply won't pull it because the power usually lacks as opposed to a gas-operated one. In order for the electric one to pull enough power, it needs a lot of electricity. I'm guessing this is the same for electric cars, as I've heard on several of those car shows that they perform pretty lousy when it comes to speed.

Not too mention that these types of engines are usually more expensive to construct.

The simple answer is – heat.

Many hybrids use this system, but not all of the energy from the turning wheels is converted into electricity stored in the battery. Friction, braking, and resistance in the wiring all convert some of that energy to heat. When the energy is discharged by the battery, resistance in the wiring and friction in the wheels generate more heat, thus more loss of energy.

This is why where is no such thing as a perpetual motion machine (one that uses and produces all the power it needs).

I own a Toyota Prius. This car regenerates electricity from the wheels when you are coasting or when you apply brakes. Additionally you can place the car in a back gear that slows it down on hills or when you are coming up to a red light. This back gear directs the energy from your spinning wheels to a generator that produces electricity. The energy is then stored in the car's battery cells and is used when you accelerate. In a way this is a self sustaining condition. However, the electricity is consumed by the electric motor very quickly. The electric motor provides a great amount of torque and will get the car moving very quickly but, it consumes the electricity stored in the battery so gasoline engine power is required to sustain teh momentum. So, although the Prius does regenerate electrical power, it is not enough to completely sustain the locomotion of the vehicle. look for newer hybrid type vehicles coming in the next couple of years. Soon, there will be one that you will plug into an electrical outlet at your home or businesses that support electeric cars. You will be able to utilize this stored energy to make trips across town to distances as much as 150 miles without using any gasoline. Another note: Driving technique is very important to proper use of a hybrid vehicle. You must anticipate opportunities to allow your car to coast to stops and utilizize the back gearing to recoperate the energy into your batteries.
You are definitely on the right track with your thoughts on regenerating electricity with your wheels!

Well, it would still require energy for the generator to be turned, no matter how small, plus for the generators to be effective at all, they would each have to be roughly the size and weight of a conventional gasoline generator. (over 100LB) So, the energy required to turn the generators and to even move them would outweigh the energy produced by them a great deal, since the gasoline engine would still have to push the car's body along, along with the generators. Trust me, it's been though of before and it would really be energy wasted. The first rule of electricity is: "You can't get something from nothing (or something less than what you're going for)"

You are trying to design a hybrid.

If they spun all the time however, your gas mileage would go down, because it would burn more gas to spin the electric motors.

So it is only effective for them to work when the car is braking or coasting to a stop.

If you like the principle of generating electricity may I suggest you look at the Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid (with the Nav Screen) or the Lexus 400h. I have driven all 3 and the screen really informs you how to maximize your electricity generation.

It also constantly records your instant gas mileage as well as a graph showing your best previous gas mileage. I always feel like I'm "driving for high score"

And with dependence on foreign oil and global warming, everyone should be driving this way.

Good Luck!

now if they just were applied on braking only you might have something…but not new to the world

When a generator is under a load it is much harder to turn.what you suggest would work but the generator may act like a "brake" under a heavy load. theres ways to overcome this though.
Also our politicians(BOTH parties) who own stock in oil would lose profits.

they can but americans arent buying them. the electric generator technology you are speaking of is what everyone else calls hybrid technology and there are already countless models on the market, while they are gaining popularity there only a fraction of the overall automotive market in america. every car absolutely can be made with the saving techology but maybe americans do not want to be bothered. i am hopefuly that the meaningful fuel efficiency increases being pushed through congress and the senate will have a profound impact on developing new technology in cars and seeing many more hybrids, and alternative vehicles on the road.

And how would the corporate HOGS make billions of dollars

Because you're making and removing energy, you can't do both and still go forward easily.

But there is regenerative breaking technology, which captures energy from braking.

Preparing for Irene: generator safety tips

Richmond (WTVR)- Is your family prepared for whatever Hurricane Irene brings? Is your safety plan in order? Emergency officials are encouraging Virginians to make it a point to get that done today.

Fire experts say as you make those plans, they’re hoping you’ll add one more thing to your list. Generator safety. This impending storm has the potential to bring down power lines and trees, leaving us all in the dark.

That’s when many of us will turn to our trusted generators. Henrico fire captain Chris Buehren says now is the time to make sure your generator is working properly and not during the storm.

He emphasizes that the home generator be placed outside to avoid dangerous Carbon Monoxide. “a safe distance about ten to fifteen feet away. Be sure to put them in areas that are not under windows or near doors so the fumes won’t get inside of your home” said Buehren.

Fire experts say when you refuel the generator be sure to put the proper fuel inside. Once it’s turned off and had a chance to cool, only then Buehren says, should you fill up the generator.

He says be mindful of the extension cords you use from the unit to various appliances. “Don’t use the generator with the in home extension cords. If you run them, you’ll need to use the heavy duty ones. Be sure to use it appropriately,” said Buehren.

How do electric generators at power plants work?

Generators using steam turbines and fossil fuel, coal, oil, nuclear fuel, wind, hydro fuel, solar fuel, and tidal movement.

They all work the same way. They use a system of turbines, which turn, either by the weight of falling water (hydro power) or through steam generated by burning fossil fuels, to move a conductive wire coil through a magnetic field. That makes electricity. Solar fuel cells work differently and generate electricity from a reaction caused by light falling on them – no moving parts.

Using a turbine, an engine spins a coil around a conductor and it essentially generates static electricity. it comes at the price of using diesel to run the engine though.

Well if you are taking about steam turbines, lets take a hydro power plant at Niagara Falls for example. the force of the water from the falls is used to turn electric turbines which makes electricity.

Nuclear power plants work buy splitting an atom which causes a chain reaction creating extreme heat and pressure, they use the heat and steam again in turbines.

As for fossil fuels, they are burned and again coal is burned and the steam powers turbines.

Solar grids collect light which is converted into energy.

They convert kinetic energy into electrical energy. the principle that makes this work is faraday's law of induction which states that a changing magnetic field through a loop (of wire for instance) will cause current through that conductor. That is why generators have loops of wire and magnets. a changing magnetic field can be created by moving the magnets or moving the wires or both at the same time. the mechanical motion (kinetic energy) could by provided by water flowing (dams), or steam flow (nuclear reactions, coal, and oil are the fuel to heat the water to create the steam), or wind flow (windmills). Solar power however does not come from a so called generator because the mechanism by which they work is not faraday's law of induction. Solar cells are usually semiconductors with the properties of producing electricity when it is exposed to light.

Windmill Electricity – Cheap Alternative Source of Energy

Windmill electricity can easily be produced even in residential areas and the whole system required for generating windmill electricity is quite compact and is cheap alternative sources of energy. Electricity board produces the electricity that is being used by us and it is also supplied to us at a very high cost and further the electricity is produced by non-renewable sources of energy and thus is available for a limited time period. the major disadvantage of producing electricity from non-renewable sources is that it produces lots of pollution and which is very dangerous for our survival and survival of the planet earth.

Wind is the renewable source of energy and if you try and do a little research you can start your own windmill electricity generator and that too at an initial investment of $200. these generators and whole systems are available in various sizes and depending on your backyard area, you can select the right model for you. you can install and fit the whole system yourself and can take help of a DIY (do it yourself) guide. Depending on the availability of wind in your area, your windmill electricity generator will generate wind electricity and you can reduce your monthly budget by 50 to 70 percent and if your area is windy your windmill generator has a potential to generate surplus electricity.

Constructing a windmill electricity generator is important, as mistakes in constructing the generator will lead to poor generation of electricity. you should therefore carefully do the task.

You can take help of any DIY (do it yourself) Guide.

How long does Diesel last in storage for generators?

I was talking with a friends and I know gas in a car or lawnmower etc will go bad after a certain amount of time. Then we got thinking about the massive amounts of diesel fuel in storage at hospitals etc, is there a storage life for it? and is it turned over all the time?

ERCOT to Reactivate Suspended Generators in Fear of Rolling Blackouts

HOUSTON – With increasing power usage amidst record-high temperatures, the threat of rolling blackouts casts a pall of uncertainty over our taxed power grid.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas announced they will be reactivating 4 previously suspended generators to further the gap between their thumb and the “blackout” button.

Those generators, from NRG Energy and Garland Power and Light, will provide 400 megawatts of energy through October in case of an emergency.

ERCOT does not know when or how much energy will be needed during that time period. the group does assure consumers that the cost is definitely preferable over the cost of statewide rolling power outages.

ERCOT has also asked consumers to conserve electricity in order to ease the burden off the power grid.

“The record breaking heat and drought have placed increased stress on the generation facilities operating within ERCOT, increasing the likelihood of the unplanned mechanical breakdown of generation units at a time when our electric demand is soaring,” an ERCOT statement read.

Draft bill urges cost cuts at utilities to prevent gouging

Electric utilities will be urged to make cost-cutting efforts under a new law promoting renewable energy to lessen the chances of the firms drastically hiking rates for power they buy from outside generators.

According to a draft bill expected to be sent to the Diet this week, the envisaged law will require utilities to buy all electricity generated by renewable energy sources at fixed prices favorable to outside providers — private firms and other entities. the law also would let utilities pass the cost of buying such energy onto consumers.

But by adding a provision forcing utilities to streamline operations, lawmakers hope to minimize the impact on households.

The bill is an amended version based on an agreement reached by the ruling Democratic Party of Japan and the two main opposition forces, the Liberal Democratic Party and new Komeito. It is expected to be submitted to the Diet this week.

The effective date of the law will be July 1, 2012. the bill worked out by both ruling bloc and opposition lawmakers stipulates that utilities can’t raise rates at least until after March 2013 in areas damaged by the March 11 quake and tsunami.

A third-party group will also be set up under the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy to ensure transparency in the process of deciding price rates.

Kan eyes green activities

Prime Minister Naoto Kan hopes to become involved in activities promoting the use of renewable energy after he steps down, according to a lawmaker.

“I’d like to engage in (biomass-related) activities without being too much of an obstacle as a former prime minister,” Kan was quoted as saying at a luncheon with lawmakers Friday.

It is the first time Kan has commented on his plans after he quits, which is widely expected to be later this month after key bills are passed by the Diet.

Home Wind Turbine Technology

Companies are constantly working on new technology in Wind Turbine. different types are tested for durability, performance, and efficiency. Wind turbine companies expand to a global field. just as wind turbines are all over the world today.

Even though wind is the essential key to the wind turbine’s performance, the newly discovered technology goes beyond today’s state-of-the-art mega-watt-class wind turbines.

To give you an idea at a glance, of how wind turbines are being improved and inspected. Giving alternate energy information and letting you know the certain changes in the wind turbine as well as the generators and other equipment associated with the wind turbine.

The Air-X Wind Turbine, distributed by Southwest Wind power, uses a new microprocessor based technology, creating an increased performance for the Wind Turbine. the Air Turbine is the world’s number one selling small turbine. it has improved battery charging capabilities as well as a reduced flutter noise from the machines. this comes from the use of the carbon fiber composite blades.

The development of research on wind turbines has increased since 2001, as more customers are in the market for alternative energy systems. Newer designs much like the Air-X are also equipped to actually shut down during large wind gusts to prevent damage to the machine. it takes just an eight mile an hour wind to get a turbine going. For optimal performance, a twelve mile an hour wind is all that is required for a small home used wind turbine.

Researchers are hoping to have wind farms all over the United States, funded by the government. These wind farms will not only help out the economy by using a natural resource, but allow companies to expand their technology on the wind turbine even further.

The wind turbine is capable of handling extreme wind conditions and windy environments. However those closer to the coast require different specs, such as heavier gauged towers and blades. These turbine machines also have more than three blades in most cases.

Enjoy the benefits of utility power and reduce your electric bill every time the wind blows. this utility-connected system with the use of wind turbines has its incentives.

Though the image of the Windmill has changed tremendously, the Wind Turbine instills the same concept for small homes, and creating electricity by a windmill.

On a last note, the horizontal windmill is not in as high of a demand as the vertical windmill. Vertical windmills or Wind Turbines are used to create power, while the horizontal windmill was used mainly for irrigation and grinding grain. both types are still an active part of our environment today.

Wind turbine technology improvements are essential for the further development of future wind turbines manufactured. what types work on homes, and what types work in wind turbine fields. Windmill power can be an alternate source of energy for our generation, as well as generations to come.
