The traditional windmill design consists of a tower, a wind shaft, a fantail and a sail. the tower is made either out of the wood, stone or the bricks that would support the rotor. the traditional towers were recorded to be three stories high originally made out of wood or bricks. Nowadays it could just be a tubular tower ranging in the height from 65-130 feet or a cable anchored pole at about 30- 55 feet. it can be made out of metal, reinforced plastic or concrete. some of the towers could be just mounted almost anywhere even on rooftops. the wind shaft supports the sails.
The sail is the device that catches the wind. it started as four cloth-covered wooden panels that acted like sails. the designed developed into shutters that automatically close and open to utilize the wind. the shutter evolved into the propeller-like airfoils, giving it the ability to rotate even in light winds. some propellers were made of metal and aluminum but most modern wind propellers are made out of fiberglass. Fiberglass is a lightweight yet strong material which is typically composed of polyester resins and glass fibers. These components make the fiberglass durable and less weight. the fantail or a tail vane is the smallest yet the most important part of the windmill. it is a mechanism invented which automatically rotates the sails into the wind.
Windmills are and will always be classical machines with its modern uses no matter how many years and centuries pass.
